The poverty of our families and the lack of proper housing and sanitation is a breeding ground for disease. Respiratory ailments, nervous and mental illness, work related injuries and many insect borne diseases such as malaria and filaria among many others. are common. Having a healthy house and regular healthy meals makes a huge difference. But for those who do not have those basic neccesities, disease is commonplace. Medical treatment for the poor is free in India however not medicines. Consequently, due to lack of proper medicines, many diseases go unattended causing chronic illness and death.
Currently the Franciscan Family Apostolate office in Alleppey, India maintains a fund to assist patients requiring regular medication for which they lack the money. In addition, the fund is used for patients requiring emergency health care or hospitalization who come to our offices seeking aid.
