Durga was abandoned by her husband after she gave birth to a son. She now lives in a hut on her parents’ property and attempts to support him.
With the support of an FFA sponsorship, Durga could open a small vegetable shop where she lives and be able to buy food and medicines for her son – he suffers from asthma. (To learn more about how the sponsorship program in Andhra Pradesh works, click here.)

Durga Bhavani is an “abandoned woman”. The phrase may have no meaning in your culture, but in India it is like a mark that a woman cannot hide; she has been abandoned by her husband and must live a life of shame. To be clear, Durga Bhavani did nothing to deserve this. She was a happy young bride, who wed a man that she believed to be honest and hard-working. She had great expectations for their life together. But everything changed when she became pregnant.
Her once loving husband became cruel and argumentative. He abused her, and when she left the home to give birth at her parents’ house, he disappeared for good. She has no idea where he is or what has become of him, and so she lives in a state of uncertainty.
Her birth family is poor but they have made a small hut for her on their property where she lives with her son, Mahimakumar, now 6. Her presence alone is an issue as some of her own family worry that having an abandoned woman so close will bring problems for them all. This is a cruel life for Durga Bhavani, but she perseveres. She finds odd jobs and takes care of her dear son. She is eager to work and can make the most of any assistance provided by sponsor.
