Vijaya is a strong, determined woman who has persevered through trying circumstances. As a young woman she had high hopes for the future. She married a nice young man from a good family and they were quickly blessed with two healthy daughters. The family had a happy life, working hard but earning their own way. Then Vijaya’s husband became very ill. He was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with tuberculosis. As part of his treatment it was discovered he was HIV positive. The entire family was also tested, and it was discovered the Vijaya was HIV positive too. The couple was in shock. Their only ray of light was that both of their daughters tested negative. With the aid of outreach workers they started treatments to control their HIV. Vijaya responded well, but her husband became more and more ill and finally passed away. Now Vijaya is a widow. Unable to support both girls, her eldest daughter has gone to live with extended family. They struggle to care for another child, but do so out of the goodness of their hearts. Vijaya’s youngest daughter remains in a nearby government boarding school. Both daughters are good students, and Vijaya wants them to do well and have better lives than what she has had. She has asked the FFA to help her start a small shop so that she can earn enough income to take care of both girls under one roof, and so the family can support each other. With the aid of a sponsor we can help her reach this goal.
