Jermaine and Junesh Majhi have raised their five children in a remote village in the State of Odisha. Theirs is a very sad story that one never wishes to hear.

The family has always lived in dire poverty in an underdeveloped area of India prone to malaria outbreaks and other illnesses. Basically most villagers go for odd jobs and depend entirely on the forested mountains for food. The Majhis have no fertile land of their own on which to try and grow crops. They have lived in a mud house with a sheet metal roof that consists of four small rooms and relied upon small running streams near their home for washing clothes, dishes and bathing. In this setting Jermaine and Junesh have toiled to provide for their children, all of whom have worked hard in their studies in hopes for improving their family’s living conditions. Their oldest son, Vivak, is doing his 1st year of B.A. studies. The two youngest children, Disha and Lipsa, are studying in 5th and 3rd grade respectively in a nearby government school.

It is the story of their other two daughters, Asha and Isha, where this family’s story becomes heart breaking. Their oldest daughter, Asha, successfully completed all her studies and was no doubt a joy and hope for Jermaine and Junesh. But, Asha was diagnosed with tuberculosis and her family could not afford to purchase all the medicines required for her treatment. And so, she has grown weaker and weaker. As we wrote this story for the website, she was in a hospital with a dire prognosis. To make matters worse, Isha, aged 14, has also been found to have T.B. and now also requires expensive treatment the family can ill afford.

The support of a sponsor could offer great hope for this family. Through the FFA’s Resource Program for the region, Jermaine could acquire and begin to raise goats and chickens which would increase the family’s earnings, helping them to meet the medical and educational expenses of their children.
