Sambangi, 27, is a truly courageous woman with a heartbreaking story. She was born with a leg malformation that makes her unable to walk without assistance. Seeing her daughter’s condition, Sambangi’s mother abandoned her and her father, leaving to remarry in another village.
Sambangi and her father moved in with her grandmother. Under her grandmother’s care Sambangi learned to walk with the aid of a crutch, and her father was able to earn money cultivating the surrounding land. Eventually they were joined by Sambangi’s Uncle and his son Rajesh, who became like a young brother to her.
The family got by with the two fathers working hard as farmers and the grandmother looking after the children. Despite this relative stability, tragedy struck again when both men died of illnesses within a year of each other. Sambangi, Rajesh and their grandmother were left to fend for themselves.
Now this family of three is struggling to survive. To keep Rajesh enrolled in school, Sambangi has become the sole breadwinner for the family. Despite her disability she does hard labor in the area through traditional work such as broom-making and farming.
She worries constantly about the future of her two remaining loved ones. Her grandmother, now 75, suffers from medical issues that require treatment and medication. Sambangi’s health is also an issue as it takes a heavy toll on her body. She is increasingly in need of a source of income that doesn’t place such physical demands on her already exhausted body.
In this rural area Sambangi’s family are well-situated to run a small livestock operation. A sponsor for Sambangi would allow her to work close to home and provide an income to care for herself and her family into the future.
