This tightly-knit family of three has a complicated background filled with tragedy. Annapurna is a 40-year-old widow who started her life in an affluent family. She married well, and the couple had two dear children. With a fortuitious start and their own hard work, the couple built a comfortable life for themselves and their children. Their son, Madhu, and daughter, Sandya, did well in school and have continued to study even as their world has been turned upside down.
The problems for this family began when Annapurna’s husband developed a drinking problem. He would often leave the family to go drinking, and during this time he also developed a car gambling habit. The family was kept in the dark, even as he gambled away all of their savings. During this time Annapurna’s husband also contracted HIV/AIDS. Again, he told no one in the family of this.
After years of secrecy, he became gravely ill with complications of his alcoholism and AIDS and passed away. His family had lost everything without warning; Annapurna was left widowed and without any savings or property. To make matters worse, she was unknowingly infected with HIV/AIDS by her husband during this time. Now she is left with two children to care for, and no means to do so.
With the aid of a sponsor, the FFA could help this poor widow to open a small shop in their village, giving her a safe and reliable source of income. She would receive the medical care she needs, and her children could finish their studies, assuring them the bright future they once were promised.
