The family of Augustine Xavier

Augustine and his wife, Mary, and their five children live in a small decaying tin shack that is neither healthy or safe for the family. They live simply and are dedicated to keeping their children in school. You can read more about their situation below.

A sponsor could help provide Augustine with funds that would make it possible to finish a new structure for the family to live in.

Along the shores of the Indian Ocean in the state of Kerala, you will find a land that is full of contrasts. This area is home to seaside hotels and restaurants, where affluent Indian families come for a beach vacation. But within a short walk of these picturesque settings, there is also great poverty. Local families struggle to earn a living here, as the extreme weather of summer heat and yearly monsoons wreak havoc on industries from fishing to tourism. This is the setting where we find the Xavier family.

When our staff visits the Xavier family, they find them living in a small, decaying tin shack. Despite the difficult conditions, the staff describe seeing, “grace on the faces of the whole family.” This is surely due to the dedication and love of parents Augustine and Mary. They have been married for 17 years.

Augustine drives an autorickshaw for work, while Mary cares for the children and earns a little money in household jobs as she can. They now have five children ranging in age from 16 to a newborn baby. Their oldest, Emmanuel, is a top student in the local school. This gives hope to his parents for his future, and they are dedicated to keeping him and his siblings in school.

At the same time, Augustine and Mary are desperate to move their family to safer housing. Each monsoon weakens the tin structure they call home, and their children need a safe, healthy home to grow in. The family has taken out loans and applied for assistance to build a better structure. They received a government grant to begin construction, but progress is slow, and they do not have the funds to ensure it will be completed.

A sponsor could help support this family to finish their home and keep the children in school. Imagine the joy of watching Emmanuel graduate from school, while their younger children grow and thrive under a safe roof; all of this is possible with your support.
