The life of a teenager in India depends on their family; some attend school, sports practice, and music lessons, leading a life much like affluent kids the world over. Others are more interested in their friends and having fun, often to the frustration of their parents. But none of this describes the lives of the children in our most impoverished families. Take the case of Ashok, a 17-year-old boy who lives with his parents and two younger sisters in Andhra Pradesh. His parents, Bhavani and Appla, adore their children and have worked hard to care for them. But the family has struggled with poverty their entire lives. They own no land, and currently live in a small, dilapidated hut on the roadside. They have no electricity or water, and their roof is constructed of leaves that must be replaced after each monsoon season.
When Ashok was young, he attended the local school. But over time his father began struggling with chronic health issues that made it a struggle to earn an income. His mother, Bhavani, became the sole earner for the household, and Ashok often missed school to help her. Then, when Bhavani was tragically diagnosed with cancer, Ashok left school entirely to seek out work. Now, he is the sole wage earner for his family, caring for his sick parents and his youngers sisters at the same time. Imagine a 17-year-old boy that you know being placed in this situation. The burden is unimaginable.
But there is hope for Ashok. With the help of a sponsor, we can help each member of this family. A sponsor can provide funds that help Ashok acquire vocational training, while his sisters, age 10 and 8, stay in school. We can work with a sponsor to get Bhavani and Appla the medical care they need, and even help this family find a safe, secure home with a roof that will keep them dry through the monsoons. Ashok’s life has been one of incredible challenge, but with a sponsor we can turn his future and that of his siblings into one of incredible hope.
