Many of the families on our website are hard-working people who have simply received a tough lot in life. They need a little help to overcome their challenges, often in the form of nutritious food, medical care, or education. In the history of the FFA we have seen thousands of families receive support that changed their lives completely.
But other families suffer from hardship and burdens that no donation can completely remove. One such case is the family of Helen and Saba in Kerala, India. This family led a happy life together for many years. Helen and her husband, Sabu, were loving parents who worked hard to provide their children with a home and education.
In recent years, Sabu had suffered from kidney issues that required dialysis. The family pulled together to support him. They took out loans and made sacrifices to support his healthcare, and Sabu continued to work whenever able. Times were hard, but no one expected the tragedy that came next. In September 2022, while Sabu was in the hospital for routine dialysis, he contracted COVID. Within days, he died.
The family was heartbroken. Helen immediately began looking for work to support her children and run their small household. She hoped that her boys could continue in school if she could earn enough to support them. But just as Helen was picking up the pieces of their shattered life, tragedy struck again. In the words of the FFA staff, “[the family] was slowly returning to normalcy [when] one day she felt a thickening on her left breast. Advanced checkups revealed the sad reality that is in the clutches of breast cancer and already the cancer has spread.”
This May, Helen underwent a surgery to remove her breast, and extend her life. Her prognosis remains serious. In the meantime, eldest son Shain has left school to support his mother and brother. But the family faces mounting medical bills, unpaid loans, and a bleak future. They are currently living in a dilapidated hut with relatives. Helen worries constantly about the future of her sons, even as her own health declines.
No person can heal the pain this family has endured in the last year, but a sponsor could change the course of their future. With the aid of sponsor, Helen can receive the best possible medical care, and both boys could complete their educations. There is still hope for them to enjoy their remaining time together and for Helen to see her boys heading toward brighter futures.
