India is a traditional society where children are expected to care for their parents as they age. Multigenerational households with three generations living under one roof are common. Juse and Maria, however, are a married couple who have no children, nor extended family. They have lived hard lives, alone, in deep poverty. Juse and Maria now face their future with no one to help them.
Juse is trained in carpentry, but he suffers from debilitating asthma. The medications that could improve his condition are too expensive for Juse and Maria to purchase. Without medication, he cannot work, and without work, he cannot provide food the two of them or afford any medical treatments for himself or Maria who has her own medical issues and cannot work. It is a desperate downward spiral.
As a result, the couple lives in a dilapidated shack with little to eat. The people of their village worry for the couple and have taken up the cause of constructing a more permanent one-room structure for them. This act of generosity will be a great improvement for the couple.
