The family of Mamatha Nayak

Mamatha is the mother of three with a husband unable to work due to malaria. All three children attend school and work hard. Mamatha is the main support of the family through part-time work. You can learn more of the family’s story below.

With the support of a sponsor, Mamatha could be part of the FFA’s Resource program and begin raising livestock for a good source of income. (To learn more about the Andhra Family Sponsorship program, click here.)

Mamatha Nayak and Biju Nayak are a young couple settled in a remote village of Jubo in the State of Odisha. They have three children: Lovely, aged 14 is the oldest daughter and is studying in 9th grade. Their youngest daughter, Lisa, aged 7, is studying in 2nd grade. Their only son Rohan, aged 11, is studying in 4th grade.  Their children are doing well in school and the parents are dedicated to providing a good education for them despite their poverty.

Mamatha and Biju are hampered greatly in achieving their goals as Biju suffers from malaria and often cannot work as a result. The burden of supporting the family then falls upon Mamatha. She goes for work in a nearby prawn company when it is available but her wages barely cover their daily needs. The medications that Biju needs for his sickness are beyond their means.

The conditions that this family lives in are truly wretched. Their home is a two room house with a sheet metal roof and an outdoor place for cooking. They use a mountain stream nearby for bathing, washing clothes and their dishes. They have no land for cultivation and depend on foraging in the surrounding forest for their sustenance and fire wood.

If someone would sponsor Mamatha, she could participate in the FFA Resource program and begin to raise some pigs, chickens or goats. This would create a dependable source of income for the family and help them to put food on their table, meet the educational expenses of their children and purchase medications for Biju.
