So it was notable when we met the Varghese family, who currently have eight family members living under the same roof. Mary Grace, age 34, is the mother to four children under the age of 10, including five-year old twins. She and her husband, John, also share their home with his aging parents, Peter and Metilda.
This is a loving family, but they struggle each day to put food on the table. John is a fisherman, one of the most common occupations in this area. He works hard every day, but his income is unreliable, often disappearing completely when fishing conditions are bad. Mary Grace spends most of her time caring for the children and her sickly in-laws. Peter and Metilda have medical issues that require expensive medication, but are too ill to work. Their small home is 40 years old and in need of some urgent repairs.
