With many ongoing global issues caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, it is easy to overlook the countless other diseases that impact the lives of the Indian families served by the FFA. The Ganadreti family provides a heartbreaking illustration of this.

Siva (husband) and Parvathi (wife) were married a decade ago, and after a long wait, they became parents to their beloved daughter, Venkata. Siva worked hard but earned just enough money to purchase the most basic necessities. The couple could only afford to rent a derelict shack for their home, and life was always a tenuous balance.

Then, disaster struck. Siva became ill and could not work. He went for medical treatment and learned that he was suffering from HIV-related tuberculosis. Doctors advised him to take regular medication, eat nutritiously, and rest. But as an impoverished family with a single breadwinner, Siva felt he had to continue working. He chose to forgo medication due to the cost. He continued to work to purchase food for this beloved family, neglecting his own health. The spiral of poverty and illness continued until Siva could not work any longer.

His condition is now very serious, and the family worries that they will lose him entirely. Adding to their horror, Parvathi has also been diagnosed with HIV. To prevent her from becoming ill – or worse – she also requires medication and nutritious food. Following these recommendations is impossible unless the family receives help.

A sponsor could help Parvathi begin a small home-based business, allowing her to earn an income and provide stability to their household. This would be a lifesaving opportunity for the family and ensure that seven-year-old Venkata does not become another of India’s countless HIV orphans.
