Mary, 40 years
Kingini, 7 years, daughter
Ponnu, 6 years, daughter
Mariamma, 80 years, Mother
Mary Kursinkal and her husband lived a modest life raising their two daughters in Kerala when, in the summer of 2014, the family was beset by tragedy. Mary’s husband left the house for work and did not return. After two days of searching for him his body was discovered. He had drowned under unknown circumstances, leaving the family with no savings and no income. This tragic and unexpected loss was very difficult for Mary and her two young daughters. Mary was left to become the sole caregiver and provider for the girls, as well as her aging mother.
Mary’s two daughters are Kingini, 7, and Ponnu, 6. Both girls are currently attending school. Mary currently works as a domestic servant to support them, and she sees the girls’ education as the most important priority for the family. At the same time Mary is responsible for supporting her mother, Mariamma, 80. Mariamma cannot work due to partial paralysis that keeps her bedridden, but in spite of this, Mary tells us that her mother is a great source of moral support to her.
The family lives together in an unfinished house that was constructed through a government program. Unfortunately, the family already has debt from the construction work so far, and cannot afford to finish the structure in their current circumstances.
This family is truly in need of a more reliable income and could benefit greatly from the assistance of a sponsor through the FFA.
