Thresiamma and Xavier are an older couple in the coastal state of Alleppey. Xavier was a fisherman by trade until he suffered a debilitating injury to his back. Unable to continue in any type of manual labor, Thresiamma was left as the primary breadwinner for the family. The couple scraped by, earning just enough to feed their two growing children and Xavier’s aging parents who lived with them. Their dilapidated home was in total disrepair and the lack of sanitary living conditions only increased their misery. Xavier’s elderly father died and their son contracted a skin disease from the pervasive rot that surrounded them. Hoping to improve things for the family, the couple applied for a government grant to aid them in demolishing their old home to build a safer structure in its place. They were awarded the grant, but this opportunity turned to tragedy when Thresiamma was injured during the demolition. A wall of the home collapsed on her leg and she lost several toes in the accident. It took nearly six months of hospital treatment to repair her foot. Despite this she is now permanently disabled. All of the couples’ savings went to pay her medical bills, leaving them without money for food, medicine, or to begin replaying the remaining loan on the home construction. Both of their children are close to finishing school, but Xavier struggles to find work and they have no money to purchase medication or treatments for the various maladies afflicting the family. A sponsor for this family could help them stabilize their financial situation and would allow FFA to work with the couple to start a small business to provide future income.
