The Raita Family

Martha and two of her four children are completely blind. The other two children are so sight impaired that they never attended school.

They rely upon neighbors to take them along to gather food in the mountains and they try to raise chickens at home. There is never enough to eat. (You can read more about their story below.)

Can you imagine a family more in need? With a sponsorship through the FFA, the children could use  the venture capital that comes with sponsorship to begin to raise goats or cows. (To learn more about how the sponsorship program in Andhra Pradesh works, click here.)

The Raitas are an unusual family that live in a remote village in the state of Odisha. Martha Raita is the head of the household. She is forty years old, completely blind, and raising four children alone after being abandoned by her husband.

All four children have severe sight impairment. The two oldest children – 18 year old son Siphonio and 16 year old daughter Subagini – have such poor sight that they never attended school and now earn money doing odd jobs and raising chickens at their home. The two youngest children – 9 year old son Jijicol and 4 year old daughter Angel – are completely blind. They do not attend school and instead are cared for entirely by their mother and siblings.

All of the family is at the mercy of their neighbors to provide them assistance in their daily lives. With the help of their neighbors they travel to the nearby mountains to gather edible plants and firewood. Life is very hard and none of them have enough to eat. It’s possible that with proper nutrition and medical intervention the children may be able to regain some sight, but at the very least they could lead healthier, more productive lives.

With some financial assistance the elder children could expand their livestock rearing to include goats or cows that would bring a much more significant income. This is a family surviving in very difficult circumstances and the financial aid of a sponsor would make an immediate and enormous difference in their lives.
