Pabina Majhi is a young 21 year old widow with three children she loves dearly. She lost her husband to cancer and now lives in a one room house with her three children searching for food and firewood on the mountain she lives on.
With the help of a sponsor, Pabina could begin to raise animals through the FFA’s Andhra Resource Program. This would provide food for the children and a small income for their needs. (To learn more about how the sponsorship program in Andhra Pradesh works, click here.)

Pabina Majhi lives in a remote village in the State of Odisha. Hers is a sad love story. At the age of twelve she fell in love with Bastina who was just 14. They ran away into the mountains and survived there, living off the mountain and having three children. After a time, Bastina was diagnosed with advanced cancer. Pabina cared for him and he finally passed away leaving Pabina to raise their children on her own.
Pabina now lives in the village in a one room house with a porch and an outside cook area. Their living conditions are pitiful. She draws drinking water from a public well. The family bathes and washes clothes and dishes in water flowing from the mountain. They have no land for cultivation and what food and firewood they have is collected on the mountain. It is difficult for Pabina to work as she has a tiny infant son to care for.
Pabina is in dire need of a sponsor’s help. Her oldest child, Sweaty, is 8 years old and studies in 2nd grade but her attendance is irregular. Her son, Bablu, goes to kindergarten. Pabina sees only a life of poverty ahead for herself and her children. If a sponsor would help Pabina, it would be a sign of hope. She could enroll in the FFA’s resource program and begin to raise some animals. This would be so good for the family. It would provide a steady source of income and food for the small family.
